One of the major challenges in Education, besides providing information in a way that is easily understood and assimilated, is adapting existing educational practice to optimise the use of technology. Exciting changes are taking place in the arenas of education.

Among the more recent changes is the merging of education with the Internet and using network technology in the classroom. Because of the excellent development in communications technology, the world has grown very much smaller. Learning is becoming a borderless
experience where a user is not limited by what he or she can pick up in the classroom. He or she can learn a language from
the native country using the Internet, listening to voice clips from the native speakers or even visit a historical site created in virtual reality.
He or she can also work on exercises or take tests or even perform a laboratory session over the network.

Many campuses are now offering classes over the Internet or at least uses the Internet in some way to conduct lessons.
Below is Yahoo's guide to America's 100 Most Wired Campuses at
http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/soc/soctaskforce/otherschools/wired/wired.html

Although many faculty members are still teaching with traditional methods, many others are realizing and reaping the potentials of multimedia, the World Wide Web and the Internet, and other forms of network-based instruction.

It is felt that the Internet is still an under-exploited resource in education. Marrying the advantages of emerging technologies such as high speed networks and access, virtual reality, teleconferencing, rapid information search techniques with the almost universal access provided by the information infrastructure, learning in this environment will be a truly exhilarating experience.

The vision of this WG is to enhance the utilisation of more advanced technologies in education and to provide a testbed for borderless learning.
- Setting up a venue for exchange of information and experience among members on more up-to-date practice of network-based education
- Setting up application templates for advanced media
- Establishing multicasting applications for teaching and learning
- Creating collaborative environments with computer-mediated communications for learning
- Promoting research and development on network-based education via collaboration among members
