1999.04.26 To: GIBN Members From: Kilnam Chon, APAN Chair Subject: Millennium Celebration Project Proposal The millennium changeover in 1999.12.31 - 2000.01.01 will be celebrated all over the world. We would like to propose to celebrate the millennium changeover through the Internet, in particular through the high performance Internet. The millennium celebration project was originally proposed by APAN Korea together with Korea System, the public television corporation to APAN, which agreed to participate in principle, and the detail to be worked out later. The following countries tentatively agreed to participate so far; Canada Japan Korea USA We are looking for more countries to join the celebration through high performance network application demonstration, which will be mullticasted to the global high performance networks and some of public broadcasting stations. Please see the candidate cities for demonstration according to our plan. Technically speaking, the primary media would be MPEG 2 with 6-8 Mbps with optional media of MPEG 1 and digital video as appropriate. Most of the demonstrations will be done in realtime, but some of them may be done in non-realtime such as video-on-demand. If you are interested in the participation, please contact apan-sec@apan.net If you know any other similar projects, please let us know as we would like to collaborate other similar projects.
