1. Web Mapping Service Development For DMSP Satellite Data download(30 min. via VTC)

Abstract: During the past year NGDC has been working to improve access to satellite imagery acquired by the U.S. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS). The DMSP satellites are in polar orbit collecting fourteen orbits per day. NGDC serves as the long term archive for DMSP data. At night the OLS collects low light imagery with detections for lights from cities and towns, gas flares, fires, and heavily lit fishing boats. Most of the data arrive at NGDC within two hours and are ingested and geolocated in near real time. Global product types offered in the web services are annual cloud free composites, lunar cycle cloud free composites, and daily visible and thermal band mosaics. Two styles of web services are in development: a) WMS (web mapping service) provides visual display of the imagery for users' specified areas of interest, and b) WCS (web coverage service) which provides visual display and download of user specified areas of interst. In the presentation we will review the WMS and WCS functions and product types.
