Meeting Minutes:

1. Hing-Yan Lee (National Grid Office, Singapore) chaired the meeting.

2. A total of 13 persons attended the meeting. They were from Australia, China, Japan, Korea, Laos, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan.

3. The meeting reviewed the co-chairs and members of e-Science WG, as the current term of office will expire on 28 Jan 2007. Dr. Young-Sung Lee (yslee@cbmu.ac.kr), MEDRIC, Seoul, Korea, agreed to be part of the committee when the term of office renews, and to be the representative from Korea. From China, Ms. Wang Chunyan (wangcy@cernet.edu.cn), CERNET, agreed to help find speakers for the e-Science sessions. The chair also expressed the need to have e-Science presentations from countries such as China, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. He requested for those present to help provide contacts. [Action: Hing-Yan Lee to follow-up with reps from Korea and China]

4. For the 23rd APAN Meeting in Manila (Philippines), Rey Vincent Babiloria (of ASTI, Philippines) agreed to help organize and chair the first session (90 minutes) on e-Science activities in Philippines. [Action: Rey Vincent Babloria to identify speakers]

5. A point was raised to request PRAGMA to share on their activities at the e-Science APAN session. This was made in response to the discussion on how APAN, SEAGF and PRAGMA could be more aware of each others' activities and to identify areas for collaboration. [Action: Hing-Yan Lee to speak with Peter Arzberger on having such a presentation for the 1st meeting of each year]

6. On the concern of overlapping of areas between e-Science WG, Grid WG, and Middleware WG, Satoshi Sekiguchi (AIST, Japan) recommended that e-Science WG focuses on e-Science applications. Similarly, the Grid WG focuses on operations & inter-operability issues, while the Middleware WG focuses on Grid Middleware. These WGs should ensure that their sessions do not overlap as they target the same audience. [Action: Hing-Yan Lee to speak with Kento Aida]

7. Satoshi Sekiguchi (AIST, Japan) also proposed that the e-Science WG could focus on application domains such High Energy Physics, High Throughput Computing, and Bioinformatics. Currently, the e-Science Workshop focuses on Collaboratories, Facilities & Instruments, and Semantic Webs and Data Grids. [Action: Jon Lau to analyze past presentations to identify basis for such an approach]

8. The chair reiterated that the current program structure for e-Science Workshop is as follows: 1st Meeting of the year: Update on e-Science Activities by Country (an annual high level overview) 2nd Meeting of the year: Specific project presentation & demonstration The advantage of this approach is to allow more time for projects to have made progress to make a worthwhile and substantial presentation. [Action: All to note]

9. The meeting ended at 1500 hours.
