Session  perfSONAR Workshop: Implementing the perfSONAR platform for measurement and monitoring
 Chair(s)  Heather Boyles [heather@internet2.edu]
Organized jointly by Internet2, GEANT2 and TransPAC2 in cooperation with APAN.
Objective  The objective of this workshop is to provide NREN decision-makers, operations managers and engineers an introduction to perfSONAR which is an infrastructure for network performance monitoring. The workshop is designed to help NREN and other R&E network and campus managers decide whether to deploy perfSONAR as a platform for measurement and monitoring across their networks; and provide enough detailed implementation information to the network engineers to begin to do so. perfSONAR is a collaboration of ESnet, GEANT2, Internet2 and RNP along with a number of R&E network participants from the Internet2 and GEANT2 communities. Multiple NRENs in Europe, GEANT2, Internet2, the LHC OPN, ESnet, RNP and a growing number of other NRENs have deployed perfSONAR. Information on perfSONAR is here: http://www.perfsonar.net
Target Audience  Decision-makers (Network directors, Executive Directors, etc.), senior operational people, engineers, systems administrators from NREN in the APAN region, other R&E networks (e.g. TEIN2) and universities and other individual institutions.
 Agenda

Instructors/Speakers: Szymon Trocha, Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center - GEANT2 perfSONAR lead
Martin Swany, University of Delaware - Internet2 perfSONAR development team
John Hicks, Indiana University - TransPAC2
Takatoshi Ikeda, APAN-JP NOC
Rick Summerhill, Internet2 CTO

1330 - 1530 Introduction to perfSONAR and Technical Architecture - S. Trocha, R. Summerhill and M. Swany

This part of the workshop is targeted at R&E network leadership to understand why perfSONAR has been developed, which national and multi-national R&E networks are already deploying, what the benefits to advanced R&E networks and their users are and what some of the resources are that an NREN may need to invest in deploying and using perfSONAR. The latter part of the session will begin to provide a technical overview of the perfSONAR architecture.

Outline:
Problem statement
Overview of architecture (high-level)
Overview of participants
Overview of related technologies and large difficulties (Authentication/Authorization integration etc...)

Detailed architecture
- list of services
- dependancies between services
- schema
- how analysis can be extended
- how measurements/data collection can be extended

1600 - 1730 Tech. Architecture continued and perfSONAR deployment experiences and step-by-step installation walk-through - M. Swany, J. Hicks, T. Ikeda

This part of the workshop is targeted at NREN leaders and network engineers who are interested in deploying perfSONAR and participating in its further development.
