1.         Title of Proposed Workshop:  Building standards-based e-Learning Systems

2.         Short Description/Objectives:  The Internet is being used widely for many applications.  One of these is in the education area.  Just as the e-mail has enabled many people all over the world to communicate and keep in touch even though they may be living in distant places, we see that e-learning, or learning with the aid of the Internet, will be able to empower many people with new job skills, knowledge, new competencies and a thirst for continuous and independent lifelong learning. At the same time, internationally, e-learning practitioners are embarking on e-learning projects that promote the use of reusable, sharable learning objects and adaptive learning strategies.  With learning objects, the learning object reuse to creation ratios can go up to as high as 1000:1.  Such a high ratio means that the learning objects are used and reused many, many times. This hands-on workshop is put together by the E-learning Competency Centre of Singapore and the APAN Education Working Group with the aim of introducing the development, deployment and research of e-learning standards and to ensure that APAN communities can benefit from this initiative.

3.         Target Audience/Size:   Community involved in creating digital teachware and courseware content, such as webpage, videos, audios as well as community developing elearning standards compliant learning tools. Size:  not more than 20.

4.         Preferred Date: Before conference but if not possible than on 27 Aug 03. Should not overlap with Edu Sessions and Edu WG meeting.
