Minutes of APAN Grid Activity Adhoc Meeting (draft)
* Description: Several groups related to APAN are involved in Grid activities either partially or fully. Considering the importance and perspective of the promising concept and technologies of Grid, we may need to consider how to approach it as APAN and how to coordinate these groups in APAN. This adhoc meeting is a kick-off meeting to provide a place to discuss the APAN efforts against Grid activities.
APAN. This adhoc meeting is a kick-off meeting to provide a place to discuss the APAN efforts against Grid activities.
1. Agenda
- Coordination between APAN and Grid communities (outside of APAN) for Grid activities
- Coordination among AREAs/WGs within APAN for Grid activities
- Position of the Grid WG in APAN
2. Coordination between APAN and Grid communities
Coordination between APAN and Grid communities (outside of APAN) for Grid activities was discussed. PRAGMA and ApGrid commented that they expected to collaborate with APAN for two issues, network technology and application technology.
PRAGMA:
- PRAGMA expects to have a clear interface to APAN in order to utilize the APAN network infrastructure, and the Grid WG is important to have the interface.
- PRAGMA expects to have strong collaboration with the Natural Resource Area for application technology on the Grid.
- PRAGMA and APAN agreed to try to hold a joint meeting once a year.
ApGrid:
- ApGrid expects collaboration with the APAN to share policy for network operation. Arrangements of network resources for the Grid would be a challenging research issue for the Network Technology Area and for the Resource Allocation Committee in APAN.
- ApGrid expects collaboration with the Application Technology Area and the Natural Resource Area. ApGrid will be happy to provide documents that introduce standard Grid technology, e.g. ∪How to build Grid∩.
Also, there was a comment that the Grid WG also should collaborate with other application communities outside of APAN, e.g. HEP, Bioinformatics.
Attendees agreed to continue the discussion about the coordination and to have meetings in future APAN/PRAGMA/ApGrid meetings.
3. Coordination among AREAs/WGs within APAN
Coordination among AREAs/WGs for Grid activities was discussed. Two Areas in APAN commented that they expected collaboration with the Grid WG for the following issues.
Natural Resource Area:
- Support for Grid middleware technology to implement NR applications
Network Technology Area:
- Network operation issue, e.g. QoS
- Troubleshooting
4. Position of the Grid WG
The position of the Grid WG was discussed:
- Is the current position of the Grid WG, a working group under the Application Technology Area, is suitable?
- Does APAN need a new group/position to coordinate Grid activities between APAN and Grid communities (outside of APAN)?
However, attendees agreed that discussion about the above issues was too fast; the above issue should be discussed after making a consensus of total coordination between APAN and Grid communities (outside of APAN).
5. Future plans
- Holding meeting in the APAN Honolulu meeting (Jan. 2004)
- Publishing the position paper by the APAN Honolulu meeting (Jan. 2004) or by the APAN Cairns meeting (Jul. 2004)
