Description:
Recently opportunities of using video conference tools are increased and especially they have been used for practical purpose rather than just purpose for research themselves. Then understanding of technologies and know how for video conference tools are very important to use them well.  Furthermore user should know not only tools but also related tools and know how i.e. echo canceler tools and best location of microphones and speakers. In this session, 1) video conference tools based on H.323 which is most popular protocols for video conference, 2) tools using DV (Digital Video) which are tools over next generation Internet , 3) other tools and know how for using these video conference tools more effectively are explained.

Presentation Abstracts:

1. Introduction of How to Use H.323 Based Video Conference Clients

Abstract: H.323 standard provides multimedia communication with real-time audio and video across IP-based networks including Internet. Nowaday, the needs of video conferencing is increasing because of the advancement in Internet. Using H.323 based client, one can do video conference with the other without considering compatibility about communication protocol. In this talk, I explain how to set up and use typical H.323 clients, Viewstation And Netmeeting.

2. Introducing Hardware and Software Required for Video Conference Using DV Camera
Abstract: Digital Video(DV) format is high-resolution and high-quality format, so using DV make the most sense for video conference. In past days, we can't use this format for video conference because it requires large-bandwidth. But recently we can readily make use of it for video conference with the progress of wider bandwidth. To do video conference
using DV, we need some hardware and software and we have to set up them properly. In this talk, first we explain how to set up PC, camera, etc. to do video conference using DV, and after that we introduce some video conference software(DVTS, DVComm, Comet DV).

3. Designing Distance Learning Systems for Large Scale Classrooms
Abstract: For interactive distance learning classes in large-scale classrooms that have more than 100 students, high quality audio/video transmission is important. In this talk, fundamental design strategies for the systems of the distance learning classes are described. For video transmission, some criteria such as camera and projector layouts, duration, and quality are
discussed. For audio transmission, acoustic echo canceling is focused. For natural and smooth audio transmission, we logically design the audio system first. After that, we implement the system with audio mixers and acoustic echo canceler. In order to make the system robust to the careless operation by novice users, we prefer to use three audio mixers.
