1996.4.4 Report on ad hoc meeting on advanced internetworking for Asia-Pacific ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Some of APEC Symposium participants met in the evening of March 28, 1996 to discuss on advanced internetworking for Asia-Pacific. See Appendix A for the participant list. The main topic of the discussion was on forming the consortium on advanced internetworking for Asia-Pacific. We decided to discuss further to come up with draft proposals on the formation of the consortium and implementation of the network in the coming months. There are several movements on global advanced networking such as G7/GII APEC/APII NIIs and their testbeds Internatinal testbeds(Applications, ATM) High speed international Internet There are obvious needs to form high speed networking in Asia-Pacific including the high speed link to North America for various purposes such as; Accommodation of ever increasing Internet traffic Testbed for advanced applications To handle ever increasing Internet traffic, Europe has the backbones such as Europanet and Ebone, and fat pipes to North America. In Asia-Pacific, we don't have appropriate backbone, and each country has its own link to USA. The situation needs to be corrected with high speed Asian backbone(s) with high high speed "Pacific Bridge". For testbeds on advanced applications, we need to link various national testbeds to test various applications. Some of the countries with the testbeds are as follows; Asia: Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Australia North America: Canada, USA For the Europe-North America link, there are CANTAT-3 in 155 Mbps from Teleglobe. We may combine the above two areas, or treat them with separate networks. The former is the production network, and the latter is the network for testing and development. NSF is expected to offer the tender for high speed intercontinental link such as at 155 Mbps soon. This may be a good opportunity to move with the obvious deadline. If we would like to progress on the discussion, we may meet at the following occasions; May 9-10 Tokyo (to come up with the initial draft) June 18-20 Seoul APEC/APII Testbed Forum June 25-28 Montreal INET'96 July 22-26 Tokyo Interop Tokyo Appendix 1: Participant List(Partial) Australia Michael McRobbie Canada Douglas Hughes Japan Shigeki Goto/NTT Shuichi Tashiro/ETL N.
