Objectives:
Internet industry is growing at a
tremendous rate and new technologies are introduced to it to increase its
efficiency and management and security. The
transmission medium has
included satellite communication and today many internet data are
transmitted via satellite. This is especially true of places
where
terrestrial communications are not available and not viable to install. Satellite Communication has its inherent latency problem which the TCP/IP
internet protocol must adapt in order for the transmission link to be effective
with high throughput. Other new internet protocols must also be tested on
the
satellite link to ensure that it is compatible to the terrestrial
fibre links.
It is crucial for the Asia-Pacific region to capture the
ongoing Satellite Internet trends and we must actively participate in the
extension and evolution of this
technology. With the advent of "internet
in the sky" projects materialising in the year 2002, it is important that
we are ready to collaborate with such partners.
In view of the established
AI3 (Asian Internet Interconnection Initiatives) testbed managed by the
WIDE consortium and JSAT Inc., the first APAN
Satellite Internet project
will be using the AI3 satellite internet link for testing and
experimentation of new technologies.
The AI3 link
will be used as the testbed for the Working Group. As the C-band link
will only be established by Dec 98, all tests and experiments will be
conducted from Jan 99 onwards. The C-band link is a 1.5 to 2 Mbps link and
it will be sufficient to test for broadband services. The link is funded
for 2
years and we must achieve good results during these 2
years.Satellite Internet project will be using the AI3 satellite internet
link for testing and experimentation of new internet technologies.
Milestones:
Phase 1: Jan 98 - Dec 98 Installation of ground station
at different countries
Phase 2: Jan 99 - June 99
Setup of testbed for experiments
Phase 3: July 99 - Dec 2001

Meetings:
It is planned to be have meetings during the period that
the APAN committee
meets which is twice a year.
